You guys! It finally happened! On Friday we closed on our very first home!
After the fastest closing ever (it only took 30 minutes) we went straight to the house and got to work. There is SO much that needs to be done and we don’t have any time to waste! Our apartment lease ends at the end of July, and we need to at least get to the point where flooring can be installed so we can move things in.
I gave a mini-tour of the house on Instagram Stories (@whitv) and got such a crazy response – it was so encouraging to hear that my readers/followers love home design as much as I do! With that in mind, I plan to write weekly updates here; just a little status report to share what we’re working on and other random tidbits!
5/12-5/14 PROGRESS REPORT
Popped champagne and got to work cleaning on Friday (Day One of owning the house).
We removed almost all of the popcorn from the downstairs ceilings using this handy tool! At first we used a trash bag with it (which fits really well) but found that it was tough not being able to see what you’re scraping. We ended up switching to the clear bag the scraper came in and it’s perfect!
Pulled out the carpet from the living and dining room – it. was. so. gross. Also ripped down the chair rail in the dining room. Turns out that the projects which involve destruction are the most fun!
Realized that the living room has major ant issues under previously mentioned carpet. There is also a major leak by the back door that led to water damage (and rot) in the sub floor. Feeling extra grateful we have a large contingency fund!
Called contractors and scheduled in-home estimates.
Worked on design plans! We’ll be using Olympus White by Sherwin Williams on our walls, Extra White (also SW) on our kitchen cabinets, and Carrara White CD honed marble (!!!) for our countertops/island. My dream come true, y’all.
Got our new fridge and moved the old one out to the garage (to become a ‘beer fridge’ of course).
More updates coming soon! My plan is to post these recaps on Mondays :)
